The Beauty
of Despised Typefaces

Typographic Publication

This typographic publication explores the perception of “despised” typefaces within the design industry, intending to revaluate their value and potential in contemporary design.

It challenges the idea that certain typefaces are unsuitable or unattractive by questioning how context and application can completely shift their meaning and impact. The publication was developed through experimental typographic compositions, using alternative angles, sizing and positioning of text and symbols rather than imagery. Each section introduces its own distinct colour palette, demonstrating how unconventional typefaces can be applied in dynamic ways. Careful consideration of materials was also important within the project with different paper stocks used to enhance the sense of surprise.

The outcome is a typographic publication that contrasts initial perception with hidden depth. The cover appears intentionally minimal and unappealing to reflect common biases, whilst the interior reveals a series of expressive and creative typographic explorations.
